The Akatsi Senior High Technical School (Akast) in Ghana emerged victorious in the second edition of the German Days Celebration Inter-School Carpentry Competition. Held over two days at Abor Senior High School (Aborsco), the event featured four schools competing in a challenge aimed at promoting vocational skills, innovation, and career development in carpentry and related trades.

The competition was organized by The Rising Lions-Ghana, with support from the German Chamber of Commerce, Bosch Power Tools, and Ejot Fixing Solutions. Participants included students from Aborsco, Wovenu Senior High Technical School (Wossets), Tsiame Senior High Technical School (Tsiamesco), and Akast. This year’s task focused on cabinet production, where Akast demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship, innovation, and problem-solving skills to secure first place. The participants’ final presentations captivated judges and attendees, highlighting the immense talent and potential of the students.

The event began with an intensive workshop on safety measures and the effective use of power tools and screws, facilitated by Emmanuel Laryea of Bosch Power Tools and Emmanuel Ankah of Ejot Fixing Solutions. This training equipped students with essential skills and knowledge, which they applied to their projects under expert guidance.

A panel of judges comprising Laryea, Ankah, and Friedel Helmich from SES Germany evaluated students on innovation, originality, technical skill, quality of work, presentation, and problem-solving ability. Akast’s final product stood out for its creativity, precision, and functionality, securing the top honor.

Peter Attipoe, Director of The Rising Lions-Ghana, emphasized the importance of recognizing skilled workers in a society that often undervalues vocational education. He stressed the significance of platforms like this competition in showcasing and celebrating the talents of young artisans.

Last year’s champion, Aborsco, participated in an exchange program in Germany. This year, Akast will receive power tools to enhance its technical department. Solomon Lodo, Project Manager at the German Chamber of Commerce, expressed gratitude to the sponsors and partners for their support in making the event a success.

The competition fostered healthy rivalry among schools while encouraging students to pursue careers in technical and vocational fields. It underscored the critical role of these skills in national development and reinforced the importance of vocational education in providing young artisans with the resources needed to excel.
